Known as the “master gland,” the pituitary gland controls other endocrine glands and regulates many bodily functions. It is divided into the anterior and posterior lobes, each of which releases specific hormones.
Anterior lobe: Produces growth hormone (GH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and prolactin.
Posterior lobe: Stores and releases oxytocin and ADH, which are produced by the hypothalamus.
Pituitary tumours, hypopituitarism (low hormone production), and hyperpituitarism (excess hormone production).
Medication: Hormone replacement therapy, medications to shrink tumours, or to balance hormone levels.
Surgery: Transsphenoidal surgery to remove tumours.
Radiation Therapy: Used if surgery isn’t possible or doesn’t completely remove the tumour.
